PFAS Contamination submission to Senate Select Committee
Regional Cities NSW submitted a response to the Australian Senate Select Committee Inquiry into Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).
The submission sets out the unique challenges and implications for local government that PFAS contamination poses and the reforms required to address them.
Drawing on detailed case studies from Bungedore, Wagga Wagga and Dubbo, the submission shows how the detection of even minor levels of PFAS can escalate into major operational, financial and community crises.
Regional Cities NSW has called for a nationally co-ordinated response that ensures
clarity of responsibility
consistent national standards
targeted investment
regional monitoring support, and
future detection.
Its recommendations to the committee include:
a clear, nationally consistent PFAS management framework;
a national, coordinated approach based on independent, evidence-based research and clear communication;
a regional PFAS monitoring and response fund;
targeted water security investment; and
a nationally-led phase out program to eliminate PFAS-containing products.
Regional Cities NSW will ensure the voices of regional cities are heard in national discussion about PFAS contamination and work with our New South Wales government partners, including the Minister for Energy and Climate Change and for Environment and Heritage Penny Sharpe and the Minister for Water Rose Jackson.
